Hyppolytus

In Greek mythology, Hyppolytus was the son of Theseus and the prince of Athens. He scorned Aphrodite and dedicated himself to the virgin goddess Artemis. Furious with the prince, Aphrodite struck Hyppolytus’s stepmother, Phaedra, with unquenchable lust for him. After Hyppolytus refused her advances, Phaedra accused Hyppolytus of raping her and committed suicide.

Believing the queen’s lies, Theseus called down a death curse on his son. By the time the King discovered the truth, Hyppolytus had already received a fatal wound from a chariot crash brought on by the curse.
